Hermanplatz

I don’t know anyone who’s interesting while they’re asleep.

There really isn’t much going on when a person is just laying there.

Sure, they may look great. Heck, they may even look angelic. Sound asleep with good looks, a killer shape, and perfect height. But at the end? Well, they’re just a still manikin, boring as ever.

Consider that for a moment.

So why is it that we get so attached to appearance? Yeah sure, what matters is what’s on the inside. Inner beauty radiates to the outside. Blah blah blah. I can almost feel your eyes roll as you read that line. As much as we like to believe it’s true, the first thing that a person sees is how you look, and most of the time that ultimately decides for them if they want to know more about you or not. They’re not going to wait until you start talking, sharing, and bonding.

Sad, but true. And you know it.

Of course appearance is important. Taking care of how you look, eat, talk, and dress is part of respecting yourself and those around you. Represent. That is what making an impression is all about. But how often have you met a person and thought them arrogant, then later became their friend? And haven’t we all believed a genuine smile only to realize it hid a dishonest person. First impressions sometimes lie.

Just imagine all the intriguing things that make a person:
Their laugh. Their taste (or lack of) in music.
Their hidden talents. Where they’ve traveled in this world.
Flashback stories from their childhood. Their awkward moments.
Their fascinating friends. Their family.
Their outspoken opinions. Their over reactions.
Their aspirations. Their exaggerated fears.
The list is endless.

Now imagine a moving, breathing body with none of that. A zombie looking as gorgeous as humanly possible, just wandering around.

Nothing too fascinating there!

“Things are not always as they seem; the first appearance deceives many.” – Phaedrus

Think about it.

Rafa Benitez’s job as an interim manager wasn’t welcomed at the Bridge at first when the Spaniard arrived, however, towards the end of the season the hatred towards him may have already lessened. With a place in the Europa League final against Benfica, and a Champions League spot approaching, Chelsea‘s season might not end in misery. The Blues had to travel to Old Trafford to face the newly crowned champions Manchester United. The football display wasn’t up to the level of the match, but a Mata strike which was deflected off Phil Jones gifted Chelsea 3rd place with 68 points. Juan Mata’s performance this season might be in the shadows due to the likes of Gareth Bale and Luis Suarez, but his participation in 32% of Chelsea’s goals just proves how vital he is to this Chelsea side. David Moyes was in search of his first away derby triumph with Everton as the Toffees faced their other half in Liverpool. The Kop end displayed a huge “Thanks” choreography to thank Everton for their Hillsborough tribute. Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin’s defensive performance was top notch throughout the game, as a result the Merseyside derby ended in a goalies draw for the first time since February 2007, despite Everton being deprived from a clear goal.

Tottenham Hotspurs‘ dream of Champions League football is still in the making with the Lilly Whites trailing their capital neighbors Chelsea with only 3 points. AVB’s men were in desperate need of the three points when they entertained Southampton at the Lane. Gareth Bale had to rescue Spurs again with his 20th goal of the season to seal a one-nil victory, after an average display from this Spurs side who will face direct Champions League rivals Chelsea on Wednesday. Already relegated QPR welcomed Arsenal at Loftus Road where the Hoops have only won 2 games this season. Theo Walcott’s 13th of the season gave the Gunners an early lead which they managed to keep on to. With only two games to go for Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal, in addition to the Chelsea-Spurs game, a Chelsea win will mathematically place them in the Champions League due to their superior goal difference over Spurs, and will also benefit the Gunners. On the other hand, a Spurs win would be ideal for them as they’ll equal Chelsea on points with Arsenal trailing 1 point behind, while the draw as expected benefits the third party Arsenal.

The Manchester City -Swansea encounter was a dull one as both teams have nothing to play for; a goalless draw was predictable at the Liberty. Wigan‘s reputation as the escapologists grows season by season in the Premier League, 9 points in the last 4 games of 2011/12 and 8 points in 2010/11, it’s May and the Latics’ time might have arrived to avoid the third ticket down among Reading and QPR. Roberto Martinez’s side had to go to the Midlands to face West Brom who are in a safe mid-table position. Shane Long’s opener and McAuley’s second weren’t enough for the Baggies as Wigan came back through Kone, McArthur and McManaman to bag the three points after a sublime performance and 2 assists from Shaun Maloney. Newcastle had to face their former employer Sam Allardyce when they traveled south to face West Ham at Upton Park, with Rob Elliot’s terrific show between the 3 posts elevating the Magpies to 38 points which couldn’t be enough in the survival battle.

Aston Villa’s 6-1 victory against Sunderland last week had some consequences on both the table and the form of both teams. Paul Lambert’s Villa had to face his former club Norwich who are back in the relegation battle after gaining only 6 points from their last 8 matches. Gabriel Agbonlahor and Ashley Westwood’s combination for Villa’s two goal made the Villans hit the 40 points marker, whilst the Canaries were held at 38. On the other hand, Sunderland entertained Stoke at the Stadium of Light with Stephane Sessegnon out for the Black Cats due to suspension. An early Jonathan Walters goal shocked the home fans, and to make things worse Craig Gardner’s red card depressed Sunderland to 10 men. An O’Shea goal was the life line for Paolo Di Canio as it assured a point to make the tally 38. Reading, already relegated, displayed an eyeful game when they faced Fulham at Craven Cottage which ended in a 4-2 win for the Royals.

Midweek football might be prove to be pretty decisive, because in addition to the Spurs-Chelsea game, Wigan who are on 35 points will host Swansea at the DW. A win for Wigan will decrement the gap between the 18th place and Fulham in 12th place to only two points with two weeks to go and no games in hand.

Player to watch:

Newcastle might sit on the electric chair if Wigan manage to win tonight, next week they head to London again to face the already relegated QPR. Hatem Ben Arfa‘s slowly getting back in form after a hamstring injury which kept him out for a couple of months, the Frenchman’s presence will be vital in the next two games to avoid a replay of the 2008/09 season.

Serie A:

Juventus wrapped up their 29th Scudetto when they hosted Palermo thanks to a penalty scored by Vidal, who is the first Juventus player to score 10 goals this season. The fans celebrated what they considered their 31st title; not convinced of the 2 titles that were stripped from the Turin side. Palermo were hoping of upsetting the home side and postpone the crowned champions but weren’t able to do so. The only black dot in the game was Pogba’s dismissal with 7 minutes on the clock. Antonio Conte has now grabbed his 2nd consecutive Scudetto in his 2nd season with the Bianconeri, after a deserved season having the best defense with only 20 goals conceded and the 2nd best attack after Roma. Palermo, on the other hand, fall back again into relegation zone. It was a typical end of season match when Chievo hosted Cagliari. Both teams shared a point in a goalless match. Chievo are safe and will remain in Serie A next season, while Cagliari just need 3 more points to mathematically be safe from relegation.

It was a very dramatic match at the Artemio Franchi when Roma visited Fiorentina. Both teams have an ambition to participate in Champions League next season. Despite Fiorentina’s control of the game and having many wasted chances, hitting the post twice , it was Roma’s Pablo Osvaldo who netted the game’s only goal in the dying minutes to grab all 3 points for the visitors. Fiorentina will regret wasting 3 points that could have temporary put them in 3rd place at the expense of AC Milan. Catania’s Gonzalo Bergessio scored a hat-trick to push 10 man Siena a step closer into the relegation zone. Siena are 5 points away from safety with 3 games to go, and to make matters worse for Giuseppe Iachini’s men, those three games are against top four sides Fiorentina, Napoli and AC Milan. Catania remain in the top half of the table after their 1st win in 6 matches.

Udinese keep their hopes up for a European spot next season, remaining just one point behind 5th place Roma, after a win against Sampdoria. Although Sampdoria’s Martins cancelled Di Natale’s opener, Udinese scored again twice through Muriel and Di Natale who now has 20 goals. Di Natale has now scored the most braces (18) across the last five Serie A seasons. Sampdoria remain in 15th place with 3 games to go. AC Milan put one foot in the Champions League after a late goal from Mario Balotelli saw the hosts secure all 3 points against Torino. Milan’s captain Christian Abbiati denied the visitors many times to keep the Rossoneri in the game. AC Milan have won six of their seven league games in which Mario Balotelli scored, drawing the other. Torino remain in 16th place, 4 points away from the relegation zone, while Milan are 4 points clear of Fiorentina.

Lazio snatched their 1st win in 4 matches when they dominated the match and beat a helpless Bologna 6-0. Hernanes scored his 6th goal from outside the box, the most in Serie A this season along with Napoli’s Gokhan Inler. But it was Miroslav Klose who grabbed all the attention, scoring 5 goals, a hat-trick within 18 minutes in the 1st half and a double in the 2nd half. The last player to score 5 goals in a single Serie A game goes back to 1986, Roma’s Roberto Pruzzo. Lazio keep small hope for a European spot while Bologna fall to 13th place and will continue in Serie A next season. Genoa moved 3 points clear of the relegation zone after they beat Pescara 4-1 at the Luigi Ferraris. Marco Borriello who has scored at least one goal against each of the 20 sides currently in Serie A, scored 2 goals and set up another to obtain an important win. Giuseppe Sculli, the former Genoa player scored a consolation goal for the visitors, who are the first team to be officially relegated to Serie B with 3 fixtures left.

Inter Milan’s misery continue for another week after they lost 3-1 at the Sao Paolo whey they visited Napoli. Cavani was the star of the evening when he scored a hat-trick to almost secure 2nd place for his side. Inter fall to 8th place with a very little hope of a European spot next season. Cavani extends his lead as Calcio’s top scorer with 26 goals. It was another mid table team match when Parma hosted Atalanta, with the hosts coming out victorious 2-0 in the end.

Player To Watch:

(Edison Cavani – Napoli): The 26 year old Uruguayan striker has now scored 26 goals for Napoli in Serie A, playing a vital role in securing 2nd place for his side and a direct Champions League spot.

La Liga:

Real Madrid further postponed the title celebrations of their rival Barcelona when they won their encounter against Valladolid with a final score of 4-3, a win that is furthest away from being a routine success. Valladolid scored the opening goal in the 8th minute through Gonzalez, before an own goal and a header from Cristiano Ronaldo made it 2-1 for the Los Blancos. Guerra scored the equalizer for the visitors 5 minutes later, before Kaka and Ronaldo scored 2 more goals in the 2nd half, with a late goal from Sastre doing nothing to prevent Madrid from snitching the win. Valencia was on for another massive home victory this week, but this time it was against the relegation suffering team Osasuna. 4 goals, 2 in each half, were enough to push Valencia 3 points clear of Malaga, with the credit going to Soldado and Ricardo Costa who scored in the 1st half, and Banega and Jonas who scored in the 2nd.

Another relegation threatened team, Celta Vigo, hosted Athletic Bilbao this week with high hopes to get out of the relegation zone. Though Celta’s motive was much higher than Bilbao, Artiz Aduriz succeeded in scoring the opening goal for the visitors. Aspas played the savior role for the hosts when he scored the equalizer just 4 minutes from time, a goal that wasn’t enough for Celta to keep them safe in the Liga. Mallorca remained at the bottom of the Liga when they couldn’t manage more than a 1-1 draw against Levante. The hosts started the match with a brilliant way when Tomer Hemed scored in the 7th minute. Mallorca showed a greater ambition, while Levante didn’t manage to have more than 2 shots on goal throughout the match. Unfortunately, it was those 2 shots that were enough to score the equalizer for the visitors through Acquafresca, completely against the run of the play.

Real Zaragoza was able to make their first 2 consecutive wins this season when they managed a 3-0 rump over Rayo Vallecano. A brace from Apono, one of them from the penalty spot, and a goal from Rodri was more than enough to maintain Zaragoza’s recent good form, and keep them 1 point away from the relegation zone. Deportivo hosted Atletico Madrid at the Riazor, with high hopes for both teams, Atleti to ensure their presence in the Champions League next season, and Depor to ensure their presence in the Liga. Both teams could only manage a goalless draw, leaving them with a point each, one that fulfilled Atleti’s hopes but didn’t do so for the hosts.

Two Andalusia -Catalonia games were held this week, the first being Barcelona hosting Real Betis, with Barcelona looking forward for the title celebrations to compensate their fans for the Champions League humiliation against Bayern Munich. Once more, Tito Vilanova preferred to keep Messi on the bench, but wasn’t able to do that for the whole of the match since Betis was ahead in the game twice. Dorlan Pabon shocked the Camp Nou after opening the score for the visitors in the 2nd minute, however Alexis Sanchez scored the equalizer only 5 minutes later, before Ruben Perez made Betis ahead once more just before the 1st half’s whistle. Messi started the 2nd half, and only 10 minutes later David Villa managed to score the equalizer, and it was Messi’s turn for a brace in only 10 minutes, ensuring that Barcelona with Messi is not the same as Barcelona without hum. The other game was held between Sevilla and Espanyol at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, where the Andalusian side came out of the match with the 3 points through a great 3-0 victory. An own goal, and two others from Andujar Coke and Alvaro Negredo, were enough to make Sevilla only 3 points behind their city rival, making it a fierce competition between them on the last European place in the Liga for the remaining 4 matches.

Real Sociedad failed to guarantee 4th place when they lost to their hosts, Getafe. Though Carlos Vela opened the score, Getafe came back with 2 goals through Pedro Leon and Abdelaziz Barrada. Sociedad stayed only 2 points ahead of Valencia in the 4th place while Getafe keep themselves 2 points away from the last European place. Granada managed to have their second consecutive win when they hosted Malaga, giving their hopes to remain in the Liga for another season a much needed boost, thanks to Odion Ighalo who scored the only goal.

Player to watch:

Real Zaragoza’s player Apono scored a brace this week helping his team have their second consecutive win for the 1st time this season; two wins that will surely make Zaragoza’s hopes to stay at the Liga for the next season much more higher. Apono’s latest performance makes him a must watch in the upcoming La Liga matches for this week.

I can pretend that I’ve moved on now, made peace with the past.

I can pretend that I don’t rest my head, and watch you in my sleep,
I can pretend that all the memories, are ones that I don’t keep.

Quentin Tarantino is a filmmaker like no other. A truthful statement, although to be fair, no filmmaker is like any other. That intrinsic diversity is part of the beauty of film; nothing really ever feels the same. Watching Reservoir Dogs feels like being slapped by a penguin on crack cocaine; you’ll feel the slap at the end of the film but it’s just not as interesting as its deliverer, the penguin, being a metaphor for the premise of the film itself.

Reservoir Dogs is incoherent, fast paced, and will without a doubt demand your full attention; in other words, it’s an absolute romp. The film starts off with 8 individuals sitting in a diner, having breakfast and quite naturally, planning a diamond heist. What makes this film great to watch is that from the beginning you learn to distrust Tarantino. Very quickly you realize that the world Tarantino has created within his film is an incredibly unstable one, with characters equally unstable, for their actions are motivated by instinct that we do not understand, one that is explained later with a careless ‘sweep it under the rug’ mentality. In this mesmerizing world everyone is constantly in unforeseen danger, because with Reservoir Dogs, as is with most of Quentin’s films, in the back of your head you’re forever anticipating the moment when one of the characters will pull out a gun and blow another character’s head off. In a nut shell that’s what this film is all about; you’re waiting for someone’s head to be blown off for 99 minutes and in the most messed up way possible, it really is a lot of fun.

The film employs a very seamless non-linear method of story telling, in this case letting Tarantino play with us like putty in his hands. There’s a sense of insecurity about the whole thing; we get thrown into a scene and are left looking around wildly trying to make heads or tails of the situation, which increases our anticipation and expectations of the inescapable fact that we’re about to see someone get shot in the face. Again.

As with much of the director’s follow up work, Reservoir Dogs is a fantasized rendition of what all films ought to be like from the perspective of a violent teenager: A whole load of fun and mind bending twists that will notoriously leave you on the edge of your seat. Character development is an interesting thing in this film; you instantly develop rapport with the characters but that doesn’t change or develop much throughout the film. We’re given enough to care about what happens to the antagonist(s) but there’s not enough in this film for you to form strong connections with the characters, not enough to have you try get in their heads and figure them out.

This isn’t the kind of film that will have you thinking too much throughout, it doesn’t have an incredible amount of depth to it. I feel that if I was supposed to take anything away from Reservoir it’d be, one, that getting shot in the stomach is a very painful thing and that two, it’s a madly unpredictable world out there, you try and make sense of it but sometimes bad things happen and it’s out of your hands. That being said, Tarantino demands none of that; I don’t suspect he wants people to think too long and hard about the life lessons that can be drawn from this film, he simply offers you a joy ride. You can get on or you can go home but if you go for it, it promises to be one hell of an experience.

Meerna Ghaly, A first year Pharmacy student, was ranked among the top 125 strongest women worldwide by Newsweek for investigating in climate change and giving a speech at an international conference.

Did you face difficulties managing between your studies and your work with the committee? How did you overcome them?

Of course, I had a lot of conferences clashing with my exams and studies. I try to make use of the time I used to spend enjoying myself and focus on my cause instead, so it would not affect my academic level.

What inspired you to talk about climate change?

A while back I watched the movie, “The Inconvenient Truth” which made me realize that there is a problem. It made me wonder of the consequences, and made me read more into climate changes. Just like it affects polar bears, it will eventually affect us, humans!

I started meeting people and talking about climate change, but only last June did I see the full scope for the first time when I attended the workshop, “350.org”.

Only then I saw the bigger picture. It’s our right to have shelter and sources of water. The increase in temperature causes ice caps in the poles to melt, leading to the increase in water levels. Water will cover shores and even whole islands, in the next 5 years threatening our food, shelter and other resources. Consequently, those living in these places will have neither jobs nor shelter, and will move to other places.

This raises the question, why should they go through all of this? Global warming is why; due to car exhausts and industrial wastes. I find the U.S. and China responsible for the climate changes since they’re the two countries with most industries.

To what extend will this affect Egypt, precisely Alexandria and the Delta?

As for Egypt; the Delta, North Coast and Alexandria will suffer the most. Soil will become more salty, affecting agriculture. Around 10% of the citizens of the North will have no shelters… The question remains, where will these people go?

Is it possible by any means to delay this crisis, say for the next 150 years?

It’s not about delaying the crisis, it’s about to try and completely stop global warming. The solution lies in two things; first, to eliminate the cause of the problem, and secondly, to avoid the effects of the problem.

Is it practically possible? or is it only theoretical talk?

Yes, it is practically feasible.

So, do you mean that the U.S and China are not good at this?

No, what I mean is that they should try and use cleaner sources of energy. Instead of supporting oil companies, why don’t they support others that use greener energy sources?

And what about the oil companies?

They are the main cause behind this problem, due to their emissions!

What is your role on both national and global levels?

On a national level, as a part of the environmental group, H.O.P.E. we spread awareness on the crisis we are facing. We try to persuade country representatives, especially Egyptians, to use clean energy sources such as wind energy instead of oil in industry and fossil fuels, since the latter shape most of our problems.

On a global level, we remind the negotiators about our rights as the coming and suffering generations, and the danger we are facing if they kept emphasizing on the economical issues and neglecting other aspects.

And what’s our role, as Egyptians, in this?

We should try and reduce our contribution to the emissions. We should stop using coal or investing in it. The entire world has stopped using coal, and admitted it was the main reason behind climate changes. We should use cleaner sources of energy, like wind. Next to “El-Ein-El-Sokhna” , wind travels at an adequate speed that could be used, instead of using coal.

I have seen some wind turbines next to ‘El-Ein-El-Sokhna’, what do you think of that?

Yes, there are some wind turbines, but it is such a limited industry that we cannot rely completely on it at the moment.

How can we overcome climate change?

There are so many ways, but mainly: reuse, reduce and recycle. For example, buying a bottle of water instead of using a plastic cup each time you drink. You can try to use public transportation, group transportation or bicycles to minimize the number of vehicles emitting harmful gasses. You can also try to have a recycling basket at your home to minimize the rate of use of inorganic materials.

We live in a world that uses the product then throws it away. Thus, the amount of useful things decrease and the wastes grow larger in number. We therefore have to reuse these wastes into other useful things.

Is there a practical example on the ‘reduce and reuse’, here on campus?

Yes, almost all study materials are found online.

What about those who prefer studying from printed notes and not on their computers?

Well, instead of printing the entire lecture notes, you could print only what you need for studying. By the end of the term, you could send them for recycling.

Parents usually prefer seeing their children studying from printed materials, what about yours?

My parents are very supportive. It didn’t take me long to convince them. We have a recycling basket and a recycling company, El Mesbah El Mofeed, passes by and picks it up. It depends on where you live; in Nasr City, it comes every two weeks.

What about your siblings? Are they also interested in ‘reduce and reuse’ like you are?

They support the idea itself, and they do reduce the consumption, but they’re not deeply involved into the work like I am.

Are there people at Uni who are willing to work with you? Or those who realized that this is such an important issue that was overlooked?

I haven’t seen that in Uni as much as I did outside campus. Probably because there is already an active movement outside. On campus, however, we’re still preaching the idea. H.O.P.E is the first club on campus that deals with environmental issues, but hopefully the idea will spread.

What do you think of Earth Hour?

I believe it is a good approach. During this hour the amount of consumption decreases greatly as most countries do take part, thus reducing the amount of emissions.

Countries like America & china believe that the green house gases is a long time matter and that they would find ways to overcome these problems before occurring. Do you find this depressing and a loss of your hard work?

Not at all, I believe that what I do will be the key in finding the solutions. Climate change is already happening, the yield point which is an irreversible point is around 2 degrees increase. The Earth already rose 0.8 degrees in the past 100 years and the expected carbon dioxide emission in the upcoming period is another 0.8 degrees, which brings us too close to the point of no going back. The solutions are now necessary we cannot wait too long.

We all have a role model, who plays this part in your story?

I didn’t have a role model until almost last August. Lama Hatow, who also works on climate change, opened her own institute, “WIL”, which is related to the water distribution among the Nile countries. She believes in helping people without any return, for the sake of the community. She has a cause, she believes in that cause and will work on it. I find her truly inspiring.

How did you react to the news when you knew you were ranked in the top 125 strongest women?

I thought they had the wrong person. I represented my organization, “Global Youth”, in the UN convention by giving out a speech which I had a small part in, while other members put much more effort on it. I’m honored by this position, but I don’t feel that I deserve it.

Why were you chosen to give the speech?

It is known that Arabs are mostly the people against changing fossil fuels into clean energy, so we wanted to break traditions by presenting an Arab, and a female, who is not afraid to speak.

Hadwa Omran, Hend Riad, and Mariam Hazm, three Applied Arts graduates, won two international prizes in product designing-the field in which they specialized in. Their aim was to present environment-friendly and sustainable products.

“We studied furniture designing after graduating. We went through a long research phase in order to make a sustainable product to be used outdoor without being affected by environmental changes.” explained Mariam Hazm.

They have designed a couple of products by reusing “Plastic Bags”, producing a new fabric that is strong, durable, water resistant and can tolerate sun, sand and dust.

Hadwa Omran said, “We decided to use plastic bags, in order to find a solution for the waste in Egypt. We found out through our researches that plastic bags are one of the most waste materials in Egypt.”

They presented their product made of a plastic fabric in a competition called “Design + Industry” in Egypt, which targets international market, and won the Gold Award.

Later on, they got the chance to promote their products at “Furnix”, which lead them to exhibit their products at “Salone Internazionale del Mobile” at Milan. Within “Salone Internazionale del Mobile”, there was another exhibition named “Salone Satellite” which is dedicated only for the young designers. They joined the latter and won the second prize.

The theme of the competition held at “Salone Satellite” focused on sustainable and environment-friendly products. It was exactly what their product could deliver through re-using plastic bags and recycled cotton threads.

“We displayed our fabric to make a stool to show people that it can be used indoors and outdoors, since it’s durable, water resistant and can tolerate sun and dust.” added Hend Riad.

Mariam Hazm also mentioned that, “They have made tests on the material before making it on the furniture at “The National Center for Research” and they guaranteed that our fabric is 100% strong and environment-friendly.”

The 3 girls mentioned that the reuse of plastic bags helps in the prevention from many dangers related to plastic bags which are buried underground or left on the streets after being thrown into the garbage. Toxic gases are formed which can cause cancer.

Their products holds the name “RE” which stands for “Recycle &Reuse”, reminding people not to throw waste materials without noticing what benefit it may hold.

Their mission is to change the way people think about waste products, and that wastes must be recycled and reused to make an effective and useful product.
